In a compelling interview with The Root Gazette Africa Magazine, Engr. Adeshola Oluremi Openibo, PhD, Deputy Director of Vehicle Inspection Service at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, shared the remarkable journey that has shaped her into one of Nigeria’s most respected female engineers and public servants.
Hailing from the esteemed Openibo family of Popo-Aguda, Lagos Island, and raised in Epe, Engr. Openibo initially aspired to become a medical doctor. However, fate redirected her path to mechanical engineering a field where she would soon discover her passion and purpose. Her academic path took her from Lagos State Polytechnic to Kwara State Polytechnic, and ultimately to earning a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, with a focus on design and development.
A defining moment came during secondary school when her Integrated Science teacher insisted she belonged in the sciences, pushing her beyond her comfort zone. This pivotal experience, coupled with mentorship from esteemed engineers like Engr. A.A. Adenekan and Engr. A.G. Toriola, propelled her through the ranks of public service and academic excellence. Notably, her biodiesel processor project earned a N5 million research grant in 2022, highlighting her contribution to engineering innovation.
As a female leader in a male dominated space, Engr. Openibo emphasizes the importance of balance, support systems, and intentional time management in maintaining both personal well being and professional excellence. Inspired by pioneers like Shirley Ann Jackson and grounded by the values instilled by her parents, she continues to be a voice for representation, mentorship, and impactful leadership.
Her message to young leaders is simple yet profound: “Lead with purpose, integrity, and courage. Let your legacy be one of inclusion, boldness, and meaningful change.”
From Epe to the corridors of government and academia, Engr. Openibo’s story is surly a light to resilience, vision, and the power of believing in one's purpose.
